Sudden Strike 3: Arms to Victory Review

This is the best game in the Sudden Strike series...but it's still no Company of Heroes.

A word or three about the campaigns is in order. You can play Iwo Jima from either side, and this proves to be a better tutorial than the scenario dedicated to this purpose. Seeing how the computer opponent succeeds and where you fail under identical conditions is a godsend. Most of the other scenarios are playable from a single side and are crippled by lack of information beyond broad objectives. How many waves of reinforcements are coming? What kind? When will I be getting tanks? The maps make good use of pillboxes and trenches to push you to use the air strikes or artillery barrages you win for grabbing objectives, but they also pose significant pathfinding problems in some cases.

It’s no Company of Heroes, that’s for sure. It has some of the whiz bang WW2 fun, but very little of the strategic to-ing and fro-ing that makes very movement forward an exercise in more than simply overwhelming numbers. It’s fine entertainment for an hour at a time, but there are too many niggling problems to keep playing for long.
