Iron Man Review

A one man army in the war against interesting games

Visually, the game doesn’t do anything outside of what you’d expect to see in a PSP game. The frame rate is smooth enough, however there are visible seams in the environments, and none of the vehicle models are particularly interesting or incredibly detailed. The audio presentation is similarly uninteresting. Despite the fact that the game isn’t pushing the PSP’s visual boundaries, the loading screens are particularly long, sometimes with no indication that the game hasn’t just locked up.

As you progress through the story missions you’ll unlock bonus mini-games consisting of death races and enemy killing time trials. The death races have you flying through sets of rings, dodging enemy fire, while the enemy time trials have you killing as many enemies as you can in as short a time as possible. Given how twitchy the flying controls are, particularly the touchy transition from hovering to flying, the death races end up being not very much fun. The time trials are good if all you want to do is blow things up without worrying about having to restart a level once you die, but given how easy the combat is in the main story missions, there’s really no reason to do this mini game either.

In the end, there’s no real reason to play this game. Combat is dull and unchallenging and the flying mechanics are twitchy and unresponsive. Long time fans of the comics will recognize various Iron Man villains, however they’re added to the story in such a clunky way, that their inclusion won’t make sense to anyone, even those who know who they are in the first place. If you’re looking for a fantastic Iron Man movie experience, go and see the movie. Leave this Iron Man on the scrap heap.
