However, not all is well in a galaxy far away. Though the controls are incredibly satisfying I had a few moments of Wii-mote flinging frustration when something didn’t quite connect “right”, or the camera flip-flopped and I couldn’t see my brave apprentice as he was beaten into a pulp. There are some sloppy moments, and there is absolutely an element of repetition that some gamers will be quite put off by. While there are a few (very few) platforming elements and you do benefit from a bit of rudimentary exploration such as finding Jedi Holocubes and power upgrades that unlock special features and characters in the lackluster Duel Mode or lengthen your health and force bars, the game is extremely linear. Finally, the earlier levels tend to be more impressive than later ones – mainly since your Force powers go unchallenged by the easier foes and you’re allowed to go as crazy as you’d like.
The game has had mixed reviews, insane levels of hype and subsequent backlash, and a storied history behind it that can’t be avoided. However, anyone able to throw that all aside and enjoy the game for what it’s worth will be satisfied. If you like combat-heavy action games and don’t mind a little repetition, and you consider yourself a Star Wars fan, you’ll have a great time with The Force Unleashed. It’s far from perfect, but as the score up top reflects, it’s worth the ride.
