Gameplay is also well done. While the game does use the preload system (which I am not fond of) when jumping, the vehicles move as you would expect them to – you can tell when you are hitting heavy brush or just dirt. The jumps are a lot of fun to watch – quite often you have to remember to perform a move instead of just enjoying the air. Jumps are done by moving the left stick with a button press, and if you do the same jump over and over again, it lets you know by assigning you a ‘lame’ rating (literally) and giving you less bonus boost. Again, another nice touch but when you’re jumping you now also have to think “hmm, did I push left already?” and in the heat of the moment you might not remember.

The game progresses in career mode on a points system – you receive so many points depending on how you place in a race, and you need a certain number of points to unlock the next series of races. You can go back and play those races as often as needed to increase your points (however you only earn points if you place better than you did before).

If there’s anything that’s disappointing it’s that multiplayer is limited to online only. The online modes are great – you can have up to 15 other players in one game and the play is lag free – but how can you have no split screen multiplayer?

Pure is definitely a sleeper hit. The game is well done and not many people seem to be aware of it. Give it a rental for sure – you won’t be disappointed.
