SingStar Vol 2 Review
8 out of 15
We like SingStar, really we do, but this Volume seems somewhat...unnecessary.
Date: Friday, October 24, 2008
Author: Brendon Lindsey

  • Game: SingStar Vol 2
  • Platform: PS3
  • Publisher: Sony Computer Entertainment
  • Developer: SCE Studios London
  • ESRB: Teen
  • Genre: Singalong
  • Players: 1-8

  • What's Hot: The SingStore is still going strong, as is the online community

  • What's Not: The SingStore was added in the previous volume, and this Vol 2 release adds nothing worth the price of admission over using the aforementioned online catalog

  • Believe it or not, I love the SingStar games. It’s one of the few titles which gets exponentially better with more people present. While Rock Band and Guitar Hero tend to leave watchers feeling as if they’re a roadie, playing SingStar in a group hits the party game sweet spot.

I’ve said it once, and I’ll say it again: SingStar is a perfect title to pick up if you ever have friends over for a couple of drinks. It instantly transforms your living room into a karaoke bar. Which you could turn off at any time, and where you only see people perform that you can later make fun of—it’s magic in a Blu-ray case!

That being said, SingStar Vol. 2 shouldn’t really exist. The biggest (and by far best) innovation in the entire series happened with the first PS3 release: the SingStore. With this, Sony gave us the option to buy and download new tracks to use in the game, whenever we want. Sure, the available songs are a little skewed towards the British side of the pond, but overall there really is something for everyone in the SingStore. I had believed that meant Sony would limit their number of expansions this generation—maybe wait until they had some awesome new features which needed a new disc—but I was sadly mistaken.

With Vol. 2, you’re essentially paying $40 for 30 random tracks and a limited feature, as opposed to paying $45 for 30 tracks of your choice on the SingStore. The songs available cover a wide variety of music, but all that means is there’s definitely going to be some songs you don’t like, or have never heard of.

Here, look at a list of the songs available in SingStar Vol. 2:

  • Aerosmith – Dude (Looks Like A Lady)
  • Bad English – When I See You Smile
  • Bobby Brown – My Prerogative
  • Boys Like Girls – Hero/Heroine
  • The Bravery – Believe
  • The Cure – Pictures of You
  • Elton John & Kiki Dee – Don’t Go breaking My Heart
  • Eminem – Without Me
  • Gavin DeGraw – In Love With A Girl
  • Gnarls Barkley – Run (I’m A Natural Disaster)
  • Gold Frapp – Happiness
  • The Killers – When You Were Young
  • Lit – Miserable
  • The Mamas & The Papas – California Dreamin'
  • Natasha Bedingfield – Unwritten
  • The Offspring – Pretty Fly (For A White Guy)
  • Panic! At The Disco – Nine In The Afternoon
  • Paramore – CrushCrushCrush
  • Phantom Planet – California
  • P!nk – Just Like A Pill
  • The Police – Don’t Stand So Close To Me
  • The Proclaimers – I’m Gonna Be (500 Miles)
  • Radiohead – Street Spirit
  • Rise Against – Prayer Of The Refugee
  • Sara Bareilles – Love Song
  • The Shins – New Slang
  • Tone Loc - Funky Cold Medina
  • Weezer – Beverly Hills
  • Yael Naim – New Soul
  • Young M.C. – Bust A Move
  • Did you see any single song on that list you wouldn’t pay for? Then, as Howie says, you’ve made a bad deal because you would have been better off buying your new songs from the SingStore. There is one noteworthy addition with this game which could have justified the release, but sadly it’s limited at best.
