13 out of 15
A great golf game, or the greatest golf game?

Once you get your swing dialed in there is a metric ton of stuff to do in this game. The create a golfer mode is back allowing you to create the golfer of your dreams. Once you have your player, you can jump into the PGA Tour mode where you're placed on the amateur circuit and you're given a calendar year's worth of tournaments to conquer before graduating from Q School and hitting the PGA Tour proper. If you want to skip all of that you can go right into competing for the FedEx cup and go up against golf's greatest players. The best part of this flexibility is that the game allows you to be competitive right out of the gate. Once you create a player you're given enough stat points to bring your golfer's skills up to a point where they can compete at the professional level, no grinding needed. If you want to take part in the Tour Challenges, mini-games that allow you to recreate some of the greatest moments in golf, and gain money and stat points in the process you can, however you don't have to. If all you want is to hoist that FedEx Cup aloft, well, then get to it.

Along with all of the single player modes, the game's got you covered when you want to break it down with another human being. You can either jump online and play other golfers in either ranked or unranked matches, no friend codes needed, or you can jump into the daily and weekly tournaments that EA hosts. If a major PGA tournament has just ended you can play the same course that the pros did and see how your scores match up. With the addition of the live weather information, this option becomes particularly engaging when you're trying to match Tiger's score on a course that was sunny on Sunday when he played it, but is host to hurricane force winds when you go to play it. That's the thing about fake golf, it don't get called on account of rain. One word of warning about the tournaments, you'll be playing on Tour rules and the game doesn't normalize the stats of the participants, so you may want to try and build your golfer up if you want a chance at winning a tournament. If all you want to do is play against other living humans, then by all means, have at it.

If online isn't your thing, the Party Golf mode returns with all of the casual golf shenanigans in tow. The various mini-games from last year's game return providing a golf-lite experience for players of varying skill levels. If you want to try a different take on the sport altogether, boot up the game's Disc Golf mode, a Wii only addition that allows you to play disc golf on any of the game's 27 courses. There's no gallery and no commentary, a benefit given how dull and lifeless the game's tournament commentary is, just you, the course and three discs.

In this mode, the Motion Plus add-on is essential as the game tends to make things a bit too easy without it. I am a terrible disc golfer in real life, a fact which this mode represented accurately. To make up for my ineptitude I did play this mode with an actual, real life disc golfer and between the two of us we were able to put together something that resembled real life disc golf play. As a disc golfer's back swing is more forward (towards the screen) and backwards (away from the screen) than up and down, the game has a hard time giving you effective feedback as to your throwing power, but it does accurately depict what happens when you tip the disc up or down. It works as a pleasant diversion, however if you're looking for it to show you what actual disc golf is like, well, you're better off picking up a set of second hand discs and finding the local course.

With everything there is to do in this game, I don't know why you'd need another golf game next year, or hell, ever. Sure, it isn't the most graphically beautiful entry in the bunch, but with so much content on the disc, I'm surprised we're not left with a stick figure wearing a black Nike cap and a red Nike shirt. Between the various game modes, the online modes and the absolutely splendid swing mechanics, this game will keep you hitting the links well into the foreseeable future. For those that ever looked at the Wii with golf specifically in mind, your day has come.
