Sierra Entertainment today offered more details on PROTOTYPE, a new intellectual property being developed by Radical Entertainment for release on the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 some time in 2008.

Billed as an open-world third-person action game, players take on the role of Alex Mercer, a man haunted by his past, fighting a secret war in New York City. Alex is a shapeshifter with amazing abilities but his origins are tied to a conspiracy that could change the world as we know it forever. Mercer's amazing shapeshifting powers allow him to become an exact replica and steal the skills or powers of anyone who crosses his path.

From what little we've seen of the game through videos and screenshots, the New York City depicted therein is plagued by rampaging monsters, elite military soldiers and a whole lot of troubles. Mercer's abilities -- if you believe the screenshots -- will allow him to steal some pretty amazing powers from the cavalcade of monsters that have invaded the bustling streets of the Big Apple. It's an interesting idea for sure, and one you'll want to keep a close eye on as Sierra reveals further details about the game.
