Ubisoft confirmed today that its Montreal studio is developing Far Cry 2 for the PS3 and Xbox 360. Promising to build on the original game, Ubisoft says that Far Cry 2 utilizes a brand new game engine, allowing large, open environments, graphics suited for next-generation platforms and gameplay set in Ubisoft Montreal's interpretation of Africa.

The game is set for release in fiscal 2008–2009. To say that details are thin on this game would be an understatement. I assume that Far Cry 2 will feature many of the same features that made the original a darling of the industry beyond its promise of spiffy graphics. We'll see.
