Fable 2 Preview
From the floor of the Game Developer Conference, we learn more about Peter Molyneux's next big role-playing game.
Date: Thursday, March 08, 2007

Much like any potential children you may parent, your dog will morph in appearance and behavior according to your actions and moral alignment. Evil heroes breed naughty dogs, whereas pure do-gooders will be accompanied by gracious pets. Expressions can be used to influence your dog’s behavior directly, such as shouting “no” or encouraging him. For the most part, your dog is intelligent enough not to need direct guidance from you; rather, you can set off to adventuring without feeling hindered by your dog, but in fact being aided by him.

Visually, there’s a great deal of work that still need to be done before Fable 2 is ready for show time. Several parts of the demonstration appeared to have been running on an enhanced version of the engine used for the original game; while this isn’t necessarily a bad thing, Mr. Molyneux made it clear that the presentation is scheduled for improvement before release. Unlike the graphics, Fable 2 looks to be coming along smashingly in terms of gameplay. The ambitious aims to establish true emotional connections are likely to arise out of a bevy of new features not limited to the ability to procreate and pairing your hero with a pet dog. While we would have liked to have learned about the game’s story and toy around with the improvements made to the combat system, getting Mr. Molyneux to divulge his secrets is about as tricky for us as it is for him to create this promising-looking sequel. - Tracy Erickson.
