Any discussion of Mass Effect must involve talk of its presentation, both visual and audio. Once again, BioWare is looking to raise the bar with incredibly detailed graphics and superb sound in what promises to be a true next-generation experience. Visually, Mass Effect is a triumph; there’s simply no other role-playing game that can match the realism of its environments and characters. From high resolution weapon models to fluid facial animations to impressive high dynamic range lighting, the sheer quality is amazing. Despite the fictitious setting, the game imparts a sense of reality that draws you into the game. Of course, this isn’t done with visuals alone; rather, audio helps to create the uncanny feel of a living, breathing universe. BioWare has brought in over 100 actors to voice nearly 300 characters, as well as composed a rousing score to heighten the drama of the game. More than any other previous title, BioWare truly aims to reach a new level of visual and audio fidelity with Mass Effect.

Without question, Mass Effect looks to extend the BioWare legacy of superb role-playing. Amazing visuals only hint at the depth of gameplay it offers with an array of character development options, weapons customization features, and an unprecedented level of interactivity. Slated for release before the end of the year, there’s no doubt that Mass Effect easily secures a spot as the most anticipated role-playing game of any platform this year. - Tracy Erickson.
