Rise of the Argonauts Preview
Jason gets his Fleece on in this promising story driven action RPG.

Once you’ve received enough favor with certain gods (and you can do so with more than one), you gain access to God Powers. In essence, you gain the ability of the gods. For example, Hermes’ God Power allows you to create a black hole in combat, sucking enemies in and ripping them apart. Athena’s God Power is a Tempest, which consists of thunderbolts and electrical markers.

In terms of gameplay, controls are smooth and combat is visceral and fun, though a bit simplistic. I do like the fact that enemies visually indicate when they’re hurt. For example, an enemy may grab his arm after receiving a blow to the forearm or start limping in battle if hamstrung. I especially like the God Powers system of doing deeds. However, I can’t get over the game’s graphics. There’s no accounting for taste but the character models didn’t do much for me. Images look rather blocky and during cutscenes the characters look like paintings with just their lips moving.

Graphic debate aside, this action RPG should hit stores in mid October.
