As you venture through the lands, clearing them of Hel’s forces, the nicely detailed environments change from a stormy, rain soaked atmosphere to a sunny, lush grassland letting you know that the area is cleared of enemies. Along with the environmental effects, the lighting from the numerous torches and fires scattered about the world bring a great and ominous feel to the game. The one-on-one battles give detailed views of the gore Skarin unleashes and the shadows of the dragons as they fly over head periodically on your trek through the land are a nice touch to the overall aesthetics.
Unfortunately the terrific visuals simply aren’t enough to save the game from its increasingly monotonous gameplay. As fun as Viking is for the first half of the game, the repetitiveness will take its toll and with the option of only a single player campaign it will leave you reluctant to return to Midgard once it is over.
