Big Mutha Truckers was a surprise hit when it was released a few years back, which of course meant a sequel was inevitable.
There is a storyline with the game: “Ma Jackson,” the owner of Big Mutha Truckers has been arrested and all of the company’s money has been frozen as evidence for Ma’s tax evasion.
Ma has a way around this; she’s going to bribe the jury in order to find her not guilty. She will rely on her 4 kids, currently not in jail, to do this.
Hick State County, where the Jackson family lives, has just been through a hurricane and there are all kinds of crazy happenings around town such as UFOs and Bikers. You’ll take the role of one of those 4 kids and you’ll have to make money by trucking cargo from one place to another and avoiding the Bikers and UFOs.
The area you’ll play most is called “Trial by Trucking.” It is basically a story mode. The game basically goes like this: start at City “A” and purchase goods which you’ll sell at City “B”. Play casino game at bar like ‘snap’ where you have to hit a button when 2 cards match. Go to barkeep and see if there are any missions to complete for cash. Play mission and then take road to next city. Sell items from City A to City B. Buy items at City B for sale to City C. Rinse. Wash. Repeat.
The stores at each city have different inventory and prices vary by location. The idea is to buy low and sell high. The game actually tells you which items to get by labeling it as a ‘bargain’ or a ‘rip-off’ in case you can’t figure it out. It couldn’t get any dumber. Actually, just in case you don’t get the hint, you can press the Y button and see the prices at other stores.
The idea has promise: take a big rig, fill it with cargo and drive it to the next city within the time limit. Pick a shorter time limit and make it, receive a bigger bonus. The zillionth time you’ve done this though, it’s very boring.
If you miss the time limit, you’ll lose some of your cargo in order to get more time. At the end of the drive, there’s a ‘parking test” where you have to put your rig in the right spot. If you fail, it’s no biggie as you’ll magically be parked correctly. You do miss out on a bonus however if you fail, and you need as much money as you can get in order to bribe the jurors.
There is some strategy in driving from point A to point B. Always use your satellite map in order to see if there are shortcuts. There are always shortcuts. During your drive you’ll earn bonuses if you can crash into other cars and make it a chain reaction. Think of it like Burnout 3’s crash mode but much, much more stupid.
There are also mini-missions at the cities you visit in order to pick up additional cash. One mission is picking up 12 aliens before the town finds out about them. Another one is driving a celebrity through check points within an amount of time. Another one is….well you get the idea. If you guessed it involves some sort of checkpoint and doing it within a certain amount of time, you win! Alright, I’ll be more specific: some involve running away from the cops. The idea of a cop chase is fine; however this chase is so lame it really shouldn’t be called a chase. I could just drive right through the cop cars and get to my destination.
When you first read the manual of the game, you’ll think it looks great on paper. When you play the game, you are just brought to such a level of repetitiveness that it’s really not fun and you’ll find yourself going through the motions. The game is rated M for language and mature humor, but the humor isn’t mature at all. It’s trying to be redneck funny, but it’s not even Jeff Foxworthy funny. It seems very forced to me.
The game’s graphics don’t look that bad – except when there’s motion and many cars on the screen. By many, I mean five. The frame rate takes a major hit and it’s not pretty.
Driving the rig isn’t really bad, the controls are sluggish as you’d expect in a rig, although I’m not sure it’s because of the accurate physics or because the control is just bad. Having to make a turn with the rig can be difficult, especially when you put the rig into reverse. I’ve seen some unusual jackknife like steering maneuvers.
