Because this is based upon the Halo engine, the camera responds quite well to your actions. This is also a third person view, instead of a first person. The graphics are pretty nice, even though the toned it down to a near black and white style, especially seen in the two-player mode. The people you are eating have blood billow out of their head, which is a nice touch, especially when blood stains the ground. Heck the blood is so good that a fan of Mortal Kombat will giggle with sadistic glee over it. If you walk down a dark hallway, the cigarette you smoke will illuminate the walls beside you slightly. If you blow someone up with a gut grenade, their body will be sent through the air, with the Halo rag-doll physics without losing any of the frame-rate. These are all things I love about the engine.
The storyline is quite odd as well. The game takes place in the 1950’s in an advanced city. This city has many robots doing their bidding, from filling your vehicle with gas, to being a guide robot. It is considered the most advanced society at that time. The city is known as Punchbowl, and they find pride in their floating cars. Now because of the 50’s, everything is still old fashioned, like the crimson glasses still obfuscate the truths in life. Since this is an unrealistic game, this works out quite well. In the game there are also a few other mini-games that made me question it. You have a dance off, yes, a dance off with the head police officer. Basically it is a game of Simon say’s, where not only must you follow the colours selected by them, but you must also copy the beat. There is also another part where you must desecrate the town’s water supply. To do this, you must urinate in the reservoir, and fend off the humans whom try and stop you from doing so.
What I like best about this entire game is the music. It is perfect for this game, as recent artists like Death Cab for Cutie, Cake, and the Flaming Lips, remix and redo old songs. Oranger redid the song called Mr. Sandman, and with the punk rock style, makes it seems like an instant classic all over again. This music suits the game, and is even cool enough to listen to outside of it, which you can if you purchase the soundtrack. The sound FX when a person is being eaten is also hilarious, as they scream and beg for you to not eat their brain.
When it comes to the multiplayer aspect, it is extremely limited. All you can do in this game is team up to go through the levels. Since the game is so sort, -- the game averages from 5-10 hours long, depending on how fast you play through it -- it needed extra content. I have many ideas for multiplayer games that they could have made, from zombie head bowling, to an infection game, where there are a 50 people in the level, and you would try and infect more than your opponent.
While the ride was fun, there was not enough content to fully enjoy the expereince, unless you are an extreme zombie fan like myself. The game also lacks online play, so you will need to have someone over to multi-play via split-screen. The game is really solid, and it is really fun to play, but since the game is so short, that lowers its value considerably. All and all, Captain Gordon gives this game... a B-.
