14 out of 15
Here's your chance to be Dirk the Daring!

In addition to the game, the disk also includes some nice videos on the making of the game. Those who complete the game are not only treated to a nice closing cinema but also an original music video over the end credits guaranteed to make fans of the game smile.

I have to admit that I've been looking forward to this game since I saw it on a HDTV set at Classic Gaming Expo 2002. Don Bluth, Rick Dyer, Gary Goldman and John Pomeroy, co-creators of the original arcade game, were at CG Expo promising some of the most hardcore classic gamers that they were going to be blown away by their update of the arcade classic that would allow full control over the hero Dirk the Daring in a 3D world. A big promise. Did they measure up? Short answer … YES!

I'm usually disappointed by classic game updates - but not this time. Dragon's Lair 3D: Return to the Lair gave me hours of fun in a classic game world that I had long wanted to more thoroughly explore. It's a fun game for anyone that likes a good dungeon crawl, while fans of the arcade original will count this title among the best classic game updates ever. Here's hoping Space Ace is not far behind.
