If you were to chalk up the most addicting online console games, you wouldn't need that big of a chalk piece. Activision has changed that, only this time the chalk will be used for drawing the body outlines.
Return to Castle Wolfenstein for the Xbox is a conversion and upgrade to the previous year's PC smash hit. Besides the original great, the game has been re-tweaked in certain areas as well as now having over 15 extra stages to play through. You can go through Campaign Mode alone, do Co-Operative with a friend, or take your frustrations out online. Sadly, RtCW does not support multi-players-per-console during Live, so you'll each have to have the system, game, and TV set-up.
So, let's say you've got no one to play with on-line. Well, you and a friend can tag along on a co-op assault that will take you into the dirtiest depths of the Nazi world. Not content with their regular treacherous ways, these digital demons have begun unleashing the nastiest, scariest, and downright vile creatures out there.
Um…I need to go play…hang on a second…
Okay where were we, oh yes, these vile creatures and stuff. Not only that, but you also have your ever ample supply of Nazi henchmen to take down, who are both very skilled, and very adept and making sure you're part of the scenery. Those not used to using a controller stick for aiming purposes might be a tad off their game for the first few moments, especially considering how hard the game gets in the later stages.
And…hey look, I got a Gamer Invite…hang on just sec…
The game is very cool looking, with a lot of details put into just about everything. Guns smoke, blood splatters, bullets zing in and out of earshot, and boy do those explosions look sweet. For the simplest example of how great the game looks, zoom in using the sniper rifle to someone's face. Not only do they actually have depth in the mouth area, you can see the textures for teeth. Not too shabby.
Control is dead on accurate, but for those FPS junkies, you'll need to get used to yet another slightly different set-up. Fans that just can't put Halo down will find themselves constantly jumping instead of tossing grenades. Not really a problem with the game, just an observation as I blew myself up with a Fragmentation Grenade expecting to jump. RtCW's menus are fairly easy to plow through, and there are a ton of stats that it records. From number of deaths to the total hours on, from the hours you've created a server to how many minutes you've been a medic, it tracks it all.
